Whether you choose to train in Freestyle TaeKwonDo, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or Self Defence Systems, you will be under expert supervision and guidance. All our instructors are insured and highly-trained in martial arts, having undertaken our Instructors Training Programme and gaining over 30 years of experience amongst them. Below is a list of our main instructors that run TaeKwonDo.

Senior Instructors Bio

Master Matt Marshall

  • Founder of the Phoenix School of Martial Arts
  • 20 years of experience in several martial arts disciplines
  • 5th Degree Master Black Belt in Freestyle TaeKwonDo
  • 3rd Dan Black Belt in Self Defence Systems
  • Blue Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Mr James Godwin

  • Trained in martial arts such as Aikido, Karate and Judo since his teens and early 20s
  • Achieved 1st Degree Black Belt in 2006, where he soon began teaching as a Trainee Instructor
  • Currently holds a 4th Degree Black Belt in Freestyle TaeKwonDo, Red Belt in Self Defence Systems & trains in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
  • Martial Arts Instructor UK (MAIUK) Level 1 Qualified
  • Club Leader at our TaeKwonDo School in Locks Heath, Fareham

Mr Samuel Dyer

  • Began training in Freestyle TaeKwonDo in 2010 and after 3 years achieved a 1st Degree Black Belt
  • Studied sports coaching in college whilst also undertaking Phoenix SMA first apprentice training for 2 years to become a Certified Instructor
  • 3rd Degree Black Belt in Freestyle TaeKwonDo
  • 2nd Dan Black Belt in Self Defence Systems
  • Trains in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
  • Martial Arts Instructor UK (MAIUK) Level 1 Qualified

Martial Arts Instructor UK (MAIUK)

Phoenix SMA run two-part Instructor Courses, PSMA Instructor Courses/Workshops and MAIUK Courses. For certified instructors to run classes without supervision, they must fulfil the MAIUK requirements as well as those set out by Phoenix SMA.
