The 5 Tenets of TaeKwonDo
There are five core beliefs at the centre of TaeKwonDo practice known as the five Tenets of TaeKwonDo. Often recited at the start of classes at a TaeKwonDo School and other martial arts schools in Fareham, it is beneficial to know the five tenets listed below, whether you’re studying freestyle TaeKwonDo or Self Defence Systems.
Every TaeKwonDo School will teach you the important rule of showing courtesy to others and treating them as you would like to be treated. This is encouraged across all martial arts schools, many religions and other aspects of life, where showing consideration to others, having good manners and treating others with respect should be upheld at all times. Phoenix SMA encourage courtesy in all our martial arts and self defence classes in Fareham and Hampshire.
Martial arts schools teach students to practice TaeKwonDo with integrity and to live to a high code of values, such as being honest with yourself and others, being able to identify from right and wrong and standing up for ethical principles. At our TaeKwonDo School in Fareham, the integrity tenant urges students to respect and care for each other, avoid cheating in tournaments and to practice TaeKwonDo methods and self defence techniques safely.
Perseverance in TaeKwonDo means to be disciplined and focused enough to reach your goals. This could be anything from reaching your next belt grade, learning a new self defence manoeuvre, winning a TaeKwonDo competition, improving your fitness or simply feeling better in yourself. Perseverance and working hard can be applied across all martial arts schools and practices and even into your personal life, for achieving all kinds of goals.
To have self-control means to have control of your actions, feelings and thoughts, a discipline that is taught in all our martial arts schools in Fareham and Hampshire. Self-control enables students to focus during tough situations, such as sparring matches and TaeKwonDo tournaments, helping students to gain better control over their martial arts practice. Self-control is also transferable to daily life, helping us to control our emotions and habits.
5. Indomitable Spirit
The last tenant taught at TaeKwonDo School is the Indomitable Spirit, which teaches martial arts students to be courageous in your beliefs and give 100% (or more!) in their TaeKwonDo training and other aspects of life. It encourages you to try hard, but also to be modest about your abilities and respectful of others no matter their stage of training. At our martial arts schools in Fareham and Hampshire, we teach students to work hard and to be welcoming of new students in our TaeKwonDo and Self Defence Systems classes.
